Dr. Thomas Oehl

Thomas Oehl is a philosopher at LMU Munich, working in the main fields of theoretical philosophy, especially metaphysics, epistemology and philosophy of mind. In his research, he is mainly concerned with the idea of »spirit (Geist)«, building on Hegel and critical theory (especially Adorno). Oehl is currently developing the idea of a critical, non-reductive »materialism« that allows to conceive of »spirit (Geist)« and »matter (Materie)« as compatible with each other and belonging together in a non-dualistic way. This idea of materialism is internally related to the idea of freedom and the problem of power.

Thomas Oehl’s recent publications include:

Wittgenstein on the pictorial roots of referentialism. Inquiry 66(6): 1069–1093 (2023).

Lässt sich der Geist kommentieren? Zu neuen kommentarischen Werken zu Hegel und Adorno. Philosophische Rundschau 70(3): 267–325 (2023).

Die Aktivität der Wahrnehmung und die Metaphysik des Geistes. Eine aktualisierende Lektüre von Hegels Philosophie des Geistes. Tübingen: Mohr Siebeck, 2021.

Drei Bedeutungen von ›Identität‹ bei Kant, Fichte und Hegel. Kant-Studien 111(3): 470–502 (2020).

Spirit’s Self-Knowledge, History, and the Absolute.

Leiden/Boston: Brill, 2018: 353–388.
