Two architectural research projects based on locally grown biomaterials and textile techniques – Architectural Yarns and Structural Textiles – establish new relationships between the soft and solid, the permanent and temporary, research and industry, the body and the landscape, and call for a discussion on newly found entanglements of architecture and other spatial practices.

»Entangled«, an open event for interdisciplinary exchange, brings together experts from materials research, architecture, textiles, and the humanities to discuss textile material practices in architecture, while inviting the public to engage in conversations about the future of our built, grown, and woven environments. A pop-up exhibition showcasing material experiments and prototypes encourages interactive engagement.

The workshop begins with presentations of tangled, looped, and warped architectural structures crafted from flax, willow, and fungi, followed by expert talks from the fields of biomaterials, textiles, and building. Further disciplinary perspectives will be interwoven during the roundtable among members of these transdisciplinary research projects.

The workshop »Entangled« builds on a network of academic and industry partners with expertise in textile technology and material flows. The research prototypes Architectural Yarns and Structural Textiles are on display in the exhibition WEtransFORM New European Bauhaus and Beyond at the Bundeskunsthalle Bonn (6 June 2025 – 25 January 2026)

»Entangled« is hosted by the Cluster of Excellence »Matters of Activity« at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin and is a part of the _matter Festival 2025.

Architectural Yarns is a research project at the Cluster of Excellence »Matters of Activity«, anchored at Max Planck Institute of Colloids and Interfaces, Department of Biomaterials and weißensee school of art and design, Department of Textile and Material Design.

The research for Plektonik – Structural Textiles has been developed at the Cluster of Excellence »Matters of Activity«. Structural Textiles – Myko.Plektonik is a collaboration with the Biomaterial Lab of the Department of Applied and Molecular Microbiology at Technical University Berlin.
